Skopelos Churches and Byzantine Monuments

One of the sights of the island is the building of the diocese of Skopelos, and an impressive Byzantine wall that includes the small church of Virgin Mary (16-17th century). Inside the town there are 15 Post Byzantine temples that have interesting frescoes and icons. A total of 360 churches and some monasteries exist in the island. Among them the Monastery of Timiou Prodromou and the temple of Evangelistria are the most interesting.

Monastery of Timiou Prodromou: It was constructed during the 17th century and it is open to the public hosting a small museum containing icons and church relics.

Church of Virgin Mary:it is built on the ruins of a big three spaced basilica of the 11th century that had been built on a temple of the 6th century.

Monastery of Evangelistria: The monastery was founted in 1712 it is in a slope surrounded by rich vegetation and provides a nice view to the island

Church of Agios Ioannis:This is the church were the wedding of Mamma Mia ( the Hollywood film) was filmed. It is located 7 km east of Glossa. It is a nice church that used to be the catholicon of a monastery. The visitor would dave to climp 110 stairs to get to the church, there is a small beach under the hill of the church.

Monastery of Agia Varvara: it was founded in 1648 AD and its architecture makes it look like a fortress. The church of Agia Varvara is shaped like a cross and there are rare Byzantine icons inside the church and some frescoes as well.
