Kefallonia is accessible via airplane and boat. There are flights (lasting 45 minutes) from Athens more than once a day while the island’s airport is situated 9 km away from the capital of Argostoli. There are boats sailing to the port of Poros from Kilini a 1, ½ hour trip, and also from Patras to Sami (3, ½ hours). From Athens the ports of Kilini and Patras are accessible through bus.
Getting around in Kefallonia may involve bus, taxi or car. The island’s central bus station is situated in Argostoli and there are frequent itineraries towards the rest of the island. Visitors can get a taxi at the central taxi station at Valianou square in Argostoli or through radio taxi service. Renting a car in Kefallonia is the best means to enjoy the island’s many beautiful sites. It is a relatively large island (the largest Ionian island) and driving your self around may save you money, time and trouble. All a visitor needs is a driving licence, and a lot of attention as due to the harsh geographical features, the roads are rather curvy.
