Kos Churches and Byzantine Monuments

In Kos there are ruins of 22 old Christian basilicas; most basilicas are divided in three parts. The parts are separated by two lines of marble columns. The capitals together with the pulpits and the mosaics display specimens of a society of fine taste and wealth. The most important and bigger of those buildings is the complex of the basilicas of St Stephanos in the picturesque beach of Kefalos.

Castle of the Knights: In the entrance of the port lies the castle of the knights. The castle was built by St John knight. It has an internal and external yard which includes towers and ramparts which are separated by a ditch which has an elevated bridge. Inside the castle there is a museum with a collection of inscriptions, sculptures and altars.

Castle of Antimacheia and its temples: IN the small town of Antimacheia lies the homonymous castle. Inside the castle there was a complex of residencies. Around the fort there are two one spaced temples of St Paraskevi and St Nicholas. The tempes have frescoes and the remained parts of the frescoes are very interesting.

important findings there are frescoes of the 12-13th century AD with scenes of the life of the saint. The temple is operational today as a cemetery temple.

Mosques of Kos: There are 4 mosques inside the town and they show the period of Turkish occupation. They are Razi Chasan, Defentar, Morouk and Attic built or renovated during the 19th century.
