Thirasia is a small island west of Santorini that covers an area of 9 square km and has a population of 268 people. The west and north coasts of the island are sandy. The highest peak of the island is 294 meters (964 feet). The island has several churches, the one of St. Eirini is the most known. There is also a monastery at the south part, which has a wooden temple altar. The east part of the island has a settlement that is built over the cliff and it is very traditional and follows the Cycladic architecture as Santorini does. 150 stone paved stairs lead to the small port of Korfos. The main port of the island Riva is situated in the north part of the island. In the west part of the island lays the small settlement of Potamos that has two picturesque churches (Agios Dimitrios and Panagia Giatraina). In the past the people of the island earned their living by mining, farming and shipping, today most of the inhabitants earn their living from tourism.
