Ios Archaeological Sites

In the hill of Skarkos in the northwest side of the island some relics of a settlement have been found. The settlement is dated back to the Early Cycladic period (3000 BC). These findings are kept in the archeological museum of Ios. The excavations revealed that the ancient capital of Ios was near the todays Chora in the area of St Cathrin. A temple of Apollo is mentioned in Ancient times and also the remains of a small temple of Poseidon of Ionic rhythm were found. Also near the position Plakotos where Homer is said to have been buried there are remains of a tower of Hellenistic times and the locals call it Psaropyrgo.
