lasithi-agiosThe birth place of Zeus with ancient history and natural beauty, it has magnificent mountains, beautiful beaches, gorges and caves. The climate is temperate with mild winters and dry summers. The capital of the prefecture if Agios Nikolaos which lies in 5 hills around Vouliagmeni lake. It is a vibrating city with international velocity and it has plenty of hotels and marines. One of the most important and popular resorts Kato Elounda, which is a settlement near the town. Another important city is Ierapetra which has the warmest climate in Greece and it receives the less number of rainfalls in Europe. Lasithi is the birthplace of Zeus, according to mythology his mother Rea seeked shelter in Diktaio Andro to give birth to Zeus who was then transferred to Idaio Andro where he was suckled by Amalthia.

The first traces of human presence are dated around 6000BC. In 2600 BC new populations appeared coming from minor Asia. These new populations were familiar with the art of Bronze (2600-2000 BC). In the beginning of the first phase of the Minoan Civilization arts such as architecture, seal making, pottery, metalworking were developing constantly. In 1700 Bc an important complex of palaces was built in Kato Zakro and ports and mansions were created. In 1450 BC the area was conquered by Mycenaean. In 1000 BC after the coming of Dorians the Minoan civilization ended. Homer gives a picture of a multicultural society who spoke different languages. Important cities of that time were Ierapytna and Praisos, a third important town was Lato. In 67 BC the whole area was conquered by romans. IN 395 AD the area became a part of the East Roman Empire. In the 7th century some form of de-urbanization occurred due to the disembarkation of Arabs in Matala and the conquest of Crete by them. In 961-1204 AD there was a second Byzantine period. IN 1204 AD the island was conquered by Venetians. In this first phase of Venetian occupation until 1453 AD was milder. In 1645 AD the Turks attack the island all the important cities fall one after another and Heraklio falls last after a siege which lasted many years. In 1898 the indepented Cretan State was formed and in 1913 the island was unified with Greece.
