Heraklion beaches

The sandy beach and sanstone cliffs at Matala in Southern Crete, Greece. The carved out caves in the cliffs were used by the Romans as burial tombs. More recently in the 1960’s and 70’s they were used by hippies as a shelter.

Matala beach: It is located 67 km south west of Heraklio. It is a beach of golden sand, plenty of wooden umbrellas to rent. There are options for accommodation in the nearby village and there is also a camping.

Hersonissos beach: one of Heraklio beaches, it is located 28 km east of Heraklio. It is a long sandy beach, it is popular, organized and it has water sports facilities.

Amoudara beach: It is located 5 km west of Heraklio. It is an organized beach with plenty of accommodation, there are taverns nearby and it is a beach of golden sand.

Amnissos beach: It is located 9 km east of Heraklio. It is a well organized beach. There are water sports available whilst there are plenty of beach bars and taverns. This beach gets very crowded and it also has a lifeguard. One of its advantages is that it is meltemi proof.

Tymbaki beach: it is located 70 km south west of Heraklio, it is a small not sandy beach and the water gets usually wavy. There is accommodation and taverns in hand.

Stalida beach: It is located 33 k east of Heraklio. It is a beach of white sand, emerald waters which is usually crowded. There are accommodation options and taverns available there.

Agia Pelagia beach: It is located 24 km north of Heraklio. It is a long beach at the end of a fishing village which offers accommodations, taverns and bars.

Malia beach: It is located 36 km east of Heraklio. It is a popular beach with night life, emerald waters and white sand.

Agiofaragio beach: It is located 80 km south west of Heraklio. It can be accessed by tourist boat from Kali Limenes port. It is recommended for free camping and nudism.

Analipsi beach: It is located 20 km east of Heraklio. It is an organized beach with water sports, accommodation and taverns.

Dermatos beach: IT is located 90 km south of Heraklio. It is a long beach, unorganized and very peaceful.

Fodele beach: It is located 27 km west of Heraklio. It is in a sea side village with plenty of fish taverns and rooms to rent.

Gouves beach: It is located 16 km east of Heraklio. It is a sandy beach with many facilities such as shops, taverns, restaurants, accommodation and car renting.

Kalamaki beach: It is located 67 km south of Heraklio; it is a fully organized long beach with taverns and accommodation options, it is not wind proof though.

Karteros beach: It is located 8 km east of Heraklio. It is an organized sandy beach with lots of hotels, taverns and bars.

Keratokambos beach: It is located 70 km south of Heraklio. It is a long beach which is unorganized and wind proof; there are some taverns and hotels there.

Kokkino Chani beach: It is located 13 km east of Heraklio. There are hotels, bars, taverns, restaurants, sea sports all in hand there in an organized popular beach.

Kokkinos Pyrgos beach: It is located 67 km south of Heraklio. It is a small sandy, not meltemi proof beach with fish taverns and rooms to rent.

Komos beach: It is located 17 km south of Heraklio. It is a quit beach which is not organized. Its waters are shallow.

Lygaria beach: It is located 23 km north of Heraklio. It is an organized beach. It is a meltemi proof beach. There are restaurants, cafes and apartments to rent there.

Paleokastro beach: It is located 15 km north of Heraklio. It is a well organized beach, taverns and hotels are available there.

Psari Forada beach: It is located 88 km south east of Heraklio. It is a long, meltemi proof and unorganized beach. There are beach taverns and accommodation though.

Sidonia beach: It is located 90 km south of Heraklio. It is a tranquil beach, it is not very long. It is unorganized but it is meltemi proof.

Tertsa beach: It is located 88 km south of Heraklio. It is quiet, unorganized, meltemi proof whilst it has some taverns and hotels.

Tobrouk beach: It is located 10 km east of Heraklio. It is an organized beach which gets crowded. There are water sports facilities as well as taverns and hotels.

Linoperamata beach: It is located 7 km west of Heraklio. It is a long beach, there is a camping on the spot, and there are also accommodation options and taverns.
